    Disadvantage of illiteracy
 

Illiteracy basically means that a person is not able to use language. It compasses the lack of ability to speak, to write, to listen, and to read. Nowadays illiteracy means that a person can not write or read at a level which is necessary for him to function in certain different levels of society, or at a level which is required to carry out written communication. To make it simple and to put it in layman's terms, the opposite of literacy is illiteracy. In the world of today, a person needs to be literate to a certain level for him to function in the society, and there are a lot of disadvantages of illiteracy.

 

The human resource of a nation is analyzed with respect to the level of literacy in the country. The human capital of a country which is analyzed by policy makers and analysts at a global level will not be positive if the illiteracy rates of a country are high. The reason for this is that those people who are literate can be trained easily, and it also costs less to train them as compared to those people who are illiterate. Literate people also have more job opportunities which are broader, and they can also gain access to higher education.


In the countries which are classified as developing countries, the illiteracy rates are very high among the people. While in the countries which are classified as developed countries, this rate only goes to a few percent. There are a lot of factors which effect the illiteracy rate, such as the urbanization level, and the nations wealth.
